Programs and Services

Oakland CARES Mentoring
The CBM CARES National Mentoring Initiative is part of a comprehensive outreach project designed to improve academic and life outcomes for youth enrolled in middle schools nationwide where CBM chapters are located.  Targeted interventions include group life skills, school attachment and good citizenship.  Mentees are provided with one to one and group mentoring opportunities that allow them to grow by partnering with mentors who can share life experiences and otherwise offer themselves as good role models.

Oakland Young Policy Builders

CBMO is partnering with PUEBLO to launch Oakland Youth Policy Builders, a program for young people from 14 to 23 years old. Participants will work to improve the relationship between the Oakland police officers and Oakland's youth. Utilizing the PUEBLO survey of over 700 high school students about their interactions with police, these young policy builders will analyze the data and propose changes in policy that are intended to lessen tensions and provide for a more constructive relationship.

Participants will meet throughout the year, once or twice a month, and will be facilitated in a process of analysis, historical context, and civics. They will build skills in community organizing and effective communication and they will engage in a campaign to ensure that their proposals for reform are implemented by City officials.

Participants will receive a stipend for successfully completing this year-long commitment.
